A Sleep quality and blood pressure among senior high school students in Purwokerto
Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a global health problem with a rising prevalence, including among adolescents. Poor sleep quality in adolescents is a potential risk factor that may contribute to elevated blood pressure. This study aims to analyze the relationship between sleep quality and blood pressure in vocational students in Purwokerto.
Methods: This study employed a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 312 students were selected using a stratified random sampling technique. This study was conducted on 10th and 11th grade students at a vocational high school in Purwokerto in November 2024. The research instruments included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and blood pressure measurements obtained with a digital sphygmomanometer. Data analysis involved univariate analysis and bivariate analysis using Somers' D test.
Results: Among the participants, 40.38% experienced poor sleep quality, and 45.84% had blood pressure issues. A significant relationship was found between sleep quality and blood pressure in students of SMK N 2 Purwokerto (p < 0.001). This relationship is negative and strong, with a correlation coefficient of r = -0.517.
Conclusion: Poor sleep quality is associated with elevated blood pressure in adolescents. Researchers are further advised to use longitudinal design to understand other factors that affect blood pressure in adolescents more comprehensively.
